Chautona Havig

I write to show that Christians are real, flawed, hurting, struggling people who have messy lives--to encourage them in their walks with Jesus. I don’t write evangelistic fiction. That’s not my strength.  That’s not to say I don’t ever share Gospel elements. Of course, occasionally, someone in one of my books will come to Jesus. It’ll happen sometimes.  But I prefer to write that much how I prefer my romance–as a natural outpouring of a life lived rather than center stage.  Not because I’m ashamed to share the gospel, but because fiction isn’t how I choose to share it. Other authors do well with that, but I do not.

I write to “stimulate one another to love and good deeds.”  This is what my characters do.  They are faced with situations and eventually approach the solution as they see Scripture advising. Here’s a secret for you: I don’t always agree with their solution. But the point is, they look to Jesus–His Word–for that solution.  And that’s my goal as an author. To encourage the body of Christ. To turn to the Word of God, the Bible, for the solutions and inspirations in their lives—to use story to draw people back to the feet of the Master Storyteller.

Using story to connect readers with the Master Storyteller.

A half-bun ponytail, jeans, boots, beautiful blouse. She wore Mary Kay cosmetics.  I’d never heard of Mary Kay before I met her. Her son went to my school, and when he was home, he helped run their ranch.  Limousin cattle--they have an extra rib.  No, really. They do. I’d never heard of those, either.

That dear woman also introduced me to something else I’d never seen before--not quite like how she did it, anyway. If I had a question, her first response was always the same. She’d stop what she was doing--even if it was making dinner!--and pull her Bible forward. I can still hear her voice saying, “Let’s see what the Bible says.”

It didn’t matter if I wanted to know how to change my attitude about something, if it was okay to do something, or some point of doctrine, the answer was always the same. “Let’s see what the Bible says.”  Confession.  The day came when I got frustrated. I just wanted an answer, not a whole Bible lesson, and I said, “I don’t care what the Bible says. I just want to know what you think.”  Yeah… my life changed that day. That was the day that I learned that it didn’t matter what anyone thought; it only  matters what God has said.

Chautona Havig has written characters who were so real I woke up twice praying for [them].
